Grinding vs. removal: which do you need?
- Stump grinding - a mechanical grinder shreds the stump 4-8 inches below grade, leaving wood-chip backfill you can cover with soil and seed. Best if you're reseeding lawn or don't need to dig in that exact spot again.
- Stump removal - the stump and major structural roots are excavated out of the ground entirely, leaving a hole to backfill. Best if you're planting a new tree in the same spot, pouring a patio/walkway, or the root system is interfering with a foundation, septic line, or driveway.
Before we grind
Any excavation or grinding work near buried utility lines requires a call to Idaho's 811/Digline service at least two business days in advance - it's the law, and it protects your irrigation lines, gas lines, and buried electrical as much as ours. We handle the locate request as part of scheduling your stump job so you don't have to.
What's left behind
Grinding produces a pile of wood-chip and soil debris at the stump location, which we can leave for you to use as mulch/fill or haul away for an added fee. Full removal leaves an open hole roughly the size of the original root ball, which we backfill with soil on request.

Stump grinding is typically priced by diameter, often in the range of roughly $2-3 per inch of stump diameter with a minimum service charge, so a small stump might run $75-150 and a large stump several hundred dollars. Multiple stumps ground in the same visit usually cost less per stump. We'll give you an exact price on-site.
You can after grinding, but you may hit old root material a foot or two down. If you specifically want a new tree in that exact spot, full stump and root removal gives you a cleaner planting hole.
The wood-chip debris can temporarily tie up nitrogen in the soil as it breaks down, which is why we recommend adding a little extra topsoil and a balanced fertilizer if you're reseeding directly over a fresh grind.
A single residential stump is usually ground out in well under an hour; larger stumps or multiple stumps take longer. We can usually combine stump grinding with a same-visit tree removal if scheduled together.
