Boise Fire Department recommends creating defensible space around homes in the wildland-urban interface - the zones where neighborhoods border open foothills and canyon terrain, common in parts of 83712, 83716, and the upper edges of 83703 and 83702. That means removing dead vegetation, thinning dense brush and small trees, and limbing up remaining trees so a ground fire can't easily climb into the canopy.
